If you feel like lying on golden sand beaches and soaking up the warm Mediterranean sun today, next to cobalt, crystal-clear waters and a cocktail at hand, then the cosmopolitan south will please you greatly. Some beaches will accompany you with the vibes of selected international DJ behind the decks of world-renowned beach bars and clubs, and their legendary parties, while others will give you the peaceful, family-oriented holiday you seek. Below, are some of the most beautiful beaches to visit on the fetching southern side of the island.
- Agios Ioannis
A lovely, family-friendly beach surrounded by hills that amazes not only with its enticing natural beauty but also the spectacular free show it provides as the sun disappears behind the sacred island of Delos. If you think you have seen this beach before, you are right. It was the setting for the famous Shirley Valentine film shot in the 80s.
Imposing rocks separate Agios Ioannis beach into two parts. One is perfect for families with kids thanks to the shallow waters on the beachfront and the numerous sunbeds and umbrellas available for rent. Also ideal for windsurfers who are not yet too savvy in the sport (the beach is somewhat protected from the north winds that blow in the Cyclades so you will have some good waves but nothing too crazy). Finally, sea-side tavernas offering delicious traditional Greek dishes and the high-class Hippie Fish beach bar with its Peruvian cuisine and exotic drinks provide super lunch options.
As for the other part of Agios Ioannis beach, it is a tad more secluded, not organised, and preferred by those that want to savour the sun and the sea with the bare minimums or no clothes at all.
- Ornos Beach
Quite popular with boaters and families, this fishermen’s settlement is an easy-going place to enjoy a relaxing day that includes swimming or exploring the impressive underwater world (diving lessons are on offer). Good anchorage for yachts, which is one of the reasons jet setters and VIPs love this part of the island, and lots of boat cruises to take you to other popular beaches and isolated coves that not many have seen, make Ornos Beach a fascinating choice to spend your day.
As for the nightlife here, it does tend to centre around drinks and meals in one of the seafront restaurants with superb sea views and an open-air feel or beach bars that come equipped with a long menu of cocktails and pleasant ambient. Now if you fancy something more glitz, Mykonos Town and its bars and clubs are only a short (5-minute) drive away.
- Psarou Beach
Ideal for water sports and sunbathing, Psarou Beach attracts a big chunk of visitors every summer. Enclosed by mountains, it allows you to enjoy calm waters and a luxury beach-clubbing experience, with the famous Nammos bar & restaurant having become synonymous with palate-pleasing Mykonian decadence.
Clean, white, powdery sand, and fun in the sun without having to endure loud parties (if that’s not your cup of tea) have contributed to making Psarou Beach very popular among honeymooners and families. Also, great choice for water sports enthusiasts, who can try their waterskiing and windsurfing skills.
Other beaches of the south with a similarly relaxed atmosphere are Platis Gialos, Agia Anna, and Agrari.
- Super Paradise
The beach where the party never ends. For 30 consecutive years, the parties that take place in Super Paradise Beach are definitely remembered. Although less organised than neighbouring Paradise Beach, the uber-alternative beach has its loyal following.
From clubbers and models to VIPs and celebs, Super Paradise hosts an eclectic crowd, offering each and every one of them the kind of fun they desire – with or without clothes. Come early in the day to unwind in a relaxed atmosphere and get yourself ready for the mid-afternoon happenings, when the music gets louder, and the beach turns into one big dance floor. High energy and champagne flowing abundantly (either in glasses or all over party goers’ bodies) will make this a one-of-a-kind experience for sure.
The same exact thing with Paradise Beach and Paraga Beach.
